What is the Chevening Scholarship?

The Chevening Scholarship is the UK Government's international scholarship programme. It gives outstanding individuals from around the world the chance to study a fully funded one-year Master's degree at a UK university.

But Chevening is more than just funding. Scholars become part of an exclusive global network of Chevening alumni — professionals, leaders and changemakers from more than 160 countries. The connections you make during your year in the UK can stay with you for life.

The programme is designed for people who have the potential to become future leaders in their fields — not just strong students, but people who can demonstrate real leadership, professional experience and a clear plan for how they will make a positive difference when they return home.

💡 Good to know

There is no upper age limit for applying to Chevening. Applicants are assessed on their experience, achievements, leadership potential and future plans — not on how old they are.

Who Can Apply? The 5 Key Requirements

Before you start your application, make sure you meet all five of the following requirements. Missing even one of them means you will not be eligible.

1
You must be from an eligible country
You must be a citizen of a country or territory that participates in the Chevening programme. India is one of the eligible countries, along with many other Asian nations. Always check the official Chevening country page for your specific country before applying, as conditions can vary.

2
You must hold an undergraduate degree
You need an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for entry to a UK Master's programme. For the 2027–28 cycle, your undergraduate studies must have been completed at least two years before the application deadline of 6 October 2026.
🎓 Degree required
3
You need at least 2,800 hours of work experience
This is roughly equivalent to two years of full-time work — but it does not have to be continuous or full-time. Eligible experience includes full-time and part-time employment, voluntary work, paid and unpaid internships. You can include up to 15 different employment periods in your application.
⏱ ~2 years full-time equivalent
4
You must apply to three UK Master's courses
You need to select three different eligible UK Master's programmes as part of your application. You do not need a confirmed offer to apply — but if you are selected, you will need an unconditional offer from at least one of your chosen universities by 8 July 2027.
🏛️ 3 universities required
5
You must return home after your studies
Chevening Scholars must agree to return to their home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends. This is a firm condition of the award — not optional. Chevening is designed to support people who will go back and create positive change in their own countries.
🏠 2-year return commitment
⚠️ Important restriction

If you hold British citizenship or dual British citizenship, you are generally not eligible to apply. Applicants who are currently living in the UK at the time of application are also generally not eligible. Always check the full eligibility criteria on the official Chevening website before starting your application.

How to Apply — Step by Step

The Chevening application is completed entirely online. Here is exactly what the process looks like from start to finish.

1
Check your eligibility carefully
Before you write a single word, make sure you meet all five requirements — citizenship, undergraduate degree, 2,800 hours of work experience, three UK university choices, and the commitment to return home. Do not assume you are eligible — check the official Chevening website.
2
Research your three UK Master's courses
Choose three eligible UK universities and Master's programmes that genuinely match your academic background and career goals. Do not pick randomly. The more specifically your course choices connect to your future plans, the stronger your application will be. Apply to universities directly as soon as possible after submitting your Chevening application.
3
Prepare your application essays
This is where most applications win or lose. Chevening wants real evidence — not general statements. You need to demonstrate leadership with specific examples, show your networking and relationship-building ability, explain your professional experience and describe your career plan clearly. Think carefully about the moments in your career where you actually led something, influenced someone, or built a meaningful professional relationship.
4
Submit your online application
Complete and submit your application through the official Chevening online system before the deadline of 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Do not wait until the last day — systems can be slow near deadlines and technical problems can cost you the opportunity.
5
Wait for shortlisting
Eligible applications are reviewed by independent reading committees between October 2026 and January 2027. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview at a British embassy or high commission in your country.
6
Attend your interview
Interviews take place at British embassies and high commissions between March and April 2027. Be ready to talk in depth about your leadership experience, career plans, networking skills and your reasons for choosing your specific UK courses. This is your opportunity to bring your application to life.
7
Secure your university offer
If you are successful at interview, results are released from mid-June 2027. You must provide an unconditional offer from at least one of your selected UK universities by 8 July 2027.

Is Chevening Right for You?

Chevening is an incredible opportunity — but it is also one of the most competitive scholarship programmes in the world. Meeting the minimum requirements is just the starting point. Here is an honest checklist to help you decide whether to apply.

Chevening is a good fit if you can say yes to all of these
You genuinely want to study a Master's degree in the UK — not just any degree, but a specific programme that connects directly to your career goals.
You have real professional experience — at least 2,800 hours and ideally more, with specific examples of leadership you can talk about.
You have a clear plan for your career — Chevening wants to fund people who know where they are going and how their UK education fits into that journey.
You are genuinely committed to going back to your home country — for at least two years. If your goal is to stay in the UK after graduation, Chevening is not the right programme for you.
You have networking ability and can demonstrate it — Chevening values people who build professional relationships and use them to create change.
⚠️ One honest point

Chevening is extremely competitive. Being eligible does not mean being selected. A strong application is built on specific examples, a clear career narrative and a genuine connection between your UK study choice and your long-term goals. Start early and take the essays seriously.
