A summer trip to the beach should be one of life's simple pleasures. But data released by marine conservation charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) reveals a troubling picture of UK coastal water quality in 2026.
SAS has recorded 765 sickness reports across 406 UK beach locations since the start of 2026 — with 322 of those coming in the months since 1 May, as record temperatures brought record numbers of visitors to the coast. The reported symptoms include gastrointestinal illness, ear, nose and throat problems, skin conditions and respiratory issues.
What makes this data particularly striking is that some of those reports came from Blue Flag beaches — locations that hold the UK's most prestigious water quality award. A Blue Flag does not guarantee safe water on every visit.
A sickness report submitted to Surfers Against Sewage does not by itself establish that bathing water caused the illness. Reports indicate potential problems and help build a national picture of water quality concerns — but do not constitute proof of a failed bathing water standard at any individual beach. Always cross-reference with official Environment Agency data and check real-time alerts before swimming.
Top 10 UK Beaches with the Most Sickness Reports — 2026
The following locations recorded the highest number of sickness reports submitted to Surfers Against Sewage in 2026. The bars show each beach's proportion relative to the highest total.
Saunton Sands (#7) and Woolacombe Village (#10) both appear on this sickness list despite being rated Excellent by the Environment Agency for water quality. Ogmore-by-Sea (#9) tells a different story — Natural Resources Wales has noted it has failed to meet water quality standards in recent years, with storm overflows, ageing drainage infrastructure, road runoff and agricultural pollution all cited as contributing factors. This contrast illustrates exactly why official ratings and real-time conditions can diverge significantly — a beach can hold an Excellent rating based on long-term averages while still experiencing poor conditions on a given day.
Top 10 Blue Flag Beaches — 2026
Despite the wider picture, the UK still has hundreds of beaches that meet or exceed official water quality standards. Below are 10 confirmed 2026 Blue Flag award winners, chosen to represent a broad national spread across England and Wales.
Blue Flag is an international award administered in the UK by Keep Britain Tidy. It recognises beaches with excellent water quality, environmental management, safety standards and visitor facilities. It is a pass/fail award — not a ranking — and covers around 250 eligible UK sites each year. Achieving a Blue Flag reflects long-term standards, not a guarantee of conditions on any specific day.
Oddicombe Beach in Torquay is the standout entry — it has held a Blue Flag award every single year since the scheme launched, a record spanning 38 consecutive years.
