What Is the UK Lottery Visa?
The UK has finally announced the next round of its "lottery visa" for Indian citizens — officially called the India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) visa. It's one of the best UK visa opportunities out there for young Indians who want to live, work and travel in the UK for up to 2 years.
The catch? You can't just apply directly. There are only a limited number of places available each year, so the UK Government uses a random ballot (lottery) to pick who gets to apply. Register during the open window, and if your name is picked, you're invited to apply for the actual visa.
🎯 The deal: Register free in the ballot → If picked, apply for the visa (£340) → Live, work and travel across the UK for 2 years. No job offer needed. No sponsor required.
Key Dates You Cannot Miss
The ballot registration window opens. Register through the official GOV.UK page.
You have only 48 hours to enter. After this, the window is closed and you'll have to wait for the next ballot.
Successful entries are picked at random. Results are sent by email within 2 weeks — check your spam folder too.
Successful applicants have 90 days from the email to submit their visa application, pay the fee and provide biometrics.
Once approved, you can live, work and travel across the UK for up to 24 months.
Are You Eligible?
- Are an Indian citizen holding a valid Indian passport
- Are aged between 18 and 30 years old
- Have a qualification at bachelor's degree level or above, or equivalent
- Have £2,530 in savings to support yourself when you arrive
- Do not have any children under 18 living with you or that you are financially responsible for
- Have not previously been on the India Young Professionals Scheme
The ballot itself is free, but the actual visa application costs £340, plus the immigration health surcharge (currently £776 per year of the visa). Only enter the ballot if you meet all the eligibility requirements and are serious about applying if selected.
What You Need Before Entering
Registration takes just a few minutes, but you'll need these documents ready:
- Your full name (as it appears on your passport)
- Your date of birth
- Your passport number and details
- A clear scan or photo of your passport
- Your active mobile phone number
- A valid email address you check regularly
How to Enter the Ballot — Step by Step
Check Your Eligibility First
Before doing anything, confirm you meet all the eligibility requirements — age, qualification, savings, no dependent children. If you don't meet even one, you'll waste your time.
Prepare Your Documents
Get a clear scan or high-quality photo of your passport ready. Make sure your name, date of birth and passport number are visible.
Wait for 21 July at 1:30pm IST
Do not try to register before the ballot opens. The registration link will go live on the official GOV.UK page at exactly 1:30pm India Standard Time.
Register on GOV.UK
Go to the official GOV.UK page, click the ballot entry link and fill in your details carefully. Any mistake in your name, passport number or DOB can lead to disqualification.
Wait for the Results
You'll be notified by email within 2 weeks of the ballot closing. Check your spam and junk folders too — many people miss the email.
If Selected — Apply Within 90 Days
You have exactly 90 days from the notification email to apply for the visa, pay the fee, and submit your biometrics. Don't sit on it.
Opens 21 July 2026 at 1:30pm IST · Closes 23 July 2026 at 1:30pm IST

How to Apply for the Visa — After You're Selected
Getting picked in the ballot is just step 1. Once you receive your selection email, the real application starts. You have 90 days to complete everything. Here's exactly how to do it, step by step.
Check Your Selection Email Carefully
You'll receive an email from UK Visas and Immigration confirming your selection. Check the sender, the date, and the reference number. Save it in a safe folder — you'll need this throughout the process.
Gather All Your Supporting Documents
Before starting the application, get these ready:
- Valid Indian passport (with at least 6 months' validity)
- Proof of qualification (degree certificate + transcript)
- Bank statements showing £2,530 held for at least 28 continuous days
- Recent passport-size photograph
- TB test certificate (required for applicants from India)
Start Your Online Application on GOV.UK
Go to gov.uk and start your India Young Professionals Scheme visa application. You'll be asked to create an account, fill in your personal details, and answer questions about your background, education and finances.
Pay the Visa Fee (£340) and Immigration Health Surcharge
You'll need to pay £340 for the visa plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year). For a full 2-year visa, that's approximately £1,892 in total. Payment is made online with a debit or credit card.
Book Your Biometric Appointment (VFS Global)
After submitting your online application, you'll be redirected to book an appointment at a VFS Global visa application centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and others). This is where you'll give your fingerprints and photo.
Attend Your VFS Appointment
Bring your passport, printed application confirmation, appointment letter, TB test certificate and all supporting documents. Your biometrics (fingerprints + photograph) will be taken, and your documents will be scanned. This usually takes 30–60 minutes.
Track Your Application & Wait for the Decision
Most India YPS visa applications are decided within 3 weeks. You can track your application through your GOV.UK account or the VFS website. If you paid for the priority service, decisions can come within 5 working days.
Collect Your Passport & Vignette
Once approved, you'll receive your passport back with a 30-day entry vignette stuck inside. This lets you travel to the UK within that 30-day window.
Travel to the UK & Collect Your BRP / eVisa
Once you arrive in the UK, you'll need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or activate your eVisa within 10 days of arrival (or before your vignette expires). Details will be in your approval letter.
Start Your 2-Year UK Journey 🇬🇧
That's it — welcome to the UK! You now have 24 months to live, work, travel and build your career here. Make it count.
Once you're selected in the ballot, get your documents together fast. Bank statements need to show £2,530 for 28 continuous days — so if you're just topping up your account now, you'll need to wait a month before applying. Plan ahead.
What Happens If You're Not Selected?
Unfortunately, if your name isn't picked in the ballot, you'll simply need to enter the next ballot — as long as you still meet the eligibility criteria. The results of the ballot are final, and there's no appeal process.
Some good news: you can keep entering future ballots until you either get selected or age out of the scheme at 31. So even if this one doesn't go your way, don't lose hope.
Why This Visa Is a Big Deal
The India Young Professionals Scheme is one of the most flexible UK visa routes available. Unlike a Skilled Worker visa, you don't need a job offer, you don't need a UK sponsor, and you can work in almost any job. Here's what it gives you:
- Live in the UK for up to 24 months (2 years)
- Work in almost any job or industry — no sponsor needed
- Study a short course while you're here
- Be self-employed (with a few restrictions)
- Travel freely in and out of the UK during your visa
- Explore Europe and other countries as a UK resident
You cannot bring dependants (partner or children) on this visa. You also cannot access public funds, and this visa does not lead directly to settlement (ILR). However, you can switch to another UK visa (like Skilled Worker) later, which can lead to ILR.
